MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT.

I don’t consider myself to be ‘religious’ as such, but I do think of myself as being quite spiritual. Being old enough now to make my own decisions and to choose my faith has been so empowering and has prompted me to really evaluate who I am, what are my values and what are my beliefs?

I was raised a good little catholic girl and my family still remind me of how at 7 years old declared I was ‘going to be nun when I grow up’. Scoffing at that now, I know for a fact I wouldn’t fit the bill for what the church would recognise as ‘nun material’. But I still observe all the catholic holidays and calendar events – which brings me to why the frick I’m talking about faith and religion on the blog today.

Yesterday marked the first day of lent and, as my mum and I sat on the beach last night, we talked about what we could give up for the 40 days this year. The typical possibilities were thrown around (chocolate; drinking; meat etc) and it struck me how funny it was that we often use lent to fuel our diets or health promises!  I know fo’ sho’ that I could go 40 days without chocolate if I really set my mind to it – but having it as a Lenten promise adds an extra dose of guilt to the mix and makes it even more of an incentive not to ‘break the rules’. But does it at all help to strengthen our spiritual relationship with whatever we might believe in? For me that’s a big chocolate smothered negatore!

So this year I’m instead going to take up a few practices that I’m hoping will help to develop my sense of faith, values and spiritual contentment.

1)   I’m going to spend at least 10minutes meditating/praying/showing gratitude every single day during the Lenten period
2)  Every Friday morning I’m going to make a small monetary contribution to a charity of my choice (alternating charities each week). I plan on choosing organisations that reflect my own personal values and that serve to help a cause that I feel an affinity with.

Do you participate in this religious holiday or is this something you’d like to try to deepen your relationship with God (or whoever or whatever you may believe in)?

I’m much more of an advocate for living the most compassionate, kind and gentle life than conforming to what a particular religion or organisation instruct you to do.

So whether you’re religious or not; believe in God or Allah; are planning to give up something or will instead take something up – have a think about what behaviours guide you to your most kind and blessed existence.

Blessings from my wishy washy, religious mumbo jumbo kind of corner x
